Sorry this is a lousy picture
but I couldn't get a hold of a camera with manual controls. The heart is
raised above the surface of the ring and the thorns are woven wire
flattened to keep minimum protrusion while giving three dimensions to the
heart. I placed a wound in the side so with the thorns it is very
recognizeably the Sacred heart even without the flames which would cause
the ring to be either too wide or the heart to be too small especially on
laura's ring. The wheat is engraved directly and deeply directly into the
metal which is a departure from the usual carving in wax and casting.
Though it has taken lots of practice to accomplish I prefer the effect. I
had made some wheat in filigree also with good results but had concerns
about the cavities between the wires becoming filled with grime in
everyday farm use(It would be cost prohibitive for me to place enamel in
the crevices). The surface of the rings is flat and polished except for a
slight bevel on the edge. I really am happy with the raised heart and
working directly in the metal(forging and carving) makes the lines crisp
and bold. |
