The St. Joseph Paschal Candle

The Six of the Seven scenes are from events in the life of Joseph. St. Joseph is the Patron of the Universal Church and the Guardian of the Holy Family of God.

In a Paschal Candle every element has deep meaning and this symbolism gives it special place in the liturgy of the Church.

First and Foremost we have the Light of Christ at the top.“In Him was Life and that life was the light of men”Jn1:4.  A candle is without function or "life" apart from the flame. Just as, apart from Christ, man and Creation lose their purpose.

Mary is the Wax and feeding the wick which represents the humanity of Christ. This is not an arbitrary inclusion of Mary into the symbolism but rather the relationship of the Wax to the Light has been long-held as a revealing analogy to Mary's vital and continuing role in Salvation.

Lastly we have the humble Joseph of Nazareth, the setting into which God descended to earth. He upheld and protected the Virgin "candle" and its Saving "light" just as he now upholds the Church.

There can be no other saint that belongs more fittingly in the "exalted servitude" of supporting Mother and Divine Child (symbolically as candleholder) than St. Joseph.
